The new feed mill uses a sophisticated automation and computer system to move and trace product from receiving through the process of batching, packaging and loadout. It's a start-to-finish program that will help ensure quality standards and meet new regulatory requirements. The new facility expands the production of ADM Animal Nutrition contributing to one of five strategic growth measures that ADM has set for itself.
Highlights of the new feed facility:
- Expanded warehouse space to serve customers more quickly and efficiently
- New production line to provide range blocks for cattle, dairy cows, and horses
- Automation within receiving, batching, packaging, and loadout
- Multiple batching systems with simultaneous weighing for high-efficiency and high output
- Completely integrated process control system designed to deliver consistent food quality and safety.
Nebraska Grain and Feed Association Executive Vice President Kristi Block toured the state-of-the-art feed facility with Governor Ricketts, State Senators, and the media. During the tour, it was pointed out that ADM had designed the new facility without a basement to help with housekeeping. This reduces water and moisture issues that could arise which could be detrimental to the product or depending on the equipment's location require confined space training and regulations. Most of the processing is completed on the second floor of the facility utilizing gravity to move product through the process.
“The technology improvements in the new facility make the job better from an operational traceability and efficiency perspective,” said Darin Sigler, Plant Manager.
Automation is a tool that was sought to help with many of the industry regulations. Automation has required the staff to learn how to handle the technology that comes with it. Technologically friendly staff tend to help those with years of industry knowledge and staff with deep industry knowledge help tech-friendly staff program processes and controls correctly within industry/company guidelines.
The facility has pellet and cubing technology and will process feed for all species. The plant will run two 12-hour shifts, five days a week, upon opening with the possibility of adding a third shift. Each shift will employ between six and ten workers.
Governor Pete Ricketts joined the ribbon cutting ceremony and spoke about the importance of agricultural investments in our communities across the state to bring young people to rural communities. The Governor also credited ADM's investment in helping win the Governor's Cups and feature in SITE Selection Magazine. “Adding value to agricultural products is at the heart of a strong and growing an economy in Nebraska,” said Governor Ricketts. “By producing high-quality feed here, ADM is not only adding value to ag products, but their continued investment adds value to our state. We are excited that ADM continues to invest in Columbus and across Nebraska.”
