Earlier this month, the American Feed Industry Association's legislative and regulatory staff met with a Food and Drug Administration official to learn how animal food manufacturers were fairing with FDA and state regulatory inspections for the current good manufacturing practices (CGMP) and hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls (HA/PC) regulations required through the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Glenn Bass, the director of the Office of Food and Feed Operations-West in the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs, shared that as of June 11, the FDA has completed:
  • 136 of 250 planned CGMP inspections and state inspectors have completed 222 of 371 planned inspections.
  • 51 of 150 planned HA/PC inspections and state inspectors have completed 12 of 68 planned HA/PC inspections.
  • two of 25 planned Foreign Supplier Verification Program inspections this fiscal year.
  • 20 of 45 planned sanitary transportation inspections this fiscal year.
With regard to the inspection findings, Bass stressed the importance of keeping accurate records, maintaining equipment and buildings in a clean and orderly manner, properly labeling feed intended to be reworked and effective pest control.
