US DOT Releases National Freight Strategic Plan (NFSP)

On Sept. 3, the Department of Transportation announced its National Freight Strategic Plan (NFSP). U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao as well as DOT modal administrators made the announcement on an industry webcast.
The National Freight Strategic Plan (NFSP) defines the DOT's vision and goals for the nation's multimodal freight system and defines strategies to achieve those goals.

The goals of the NFSP are to:
  • Improve the safety, security and resilience of the national freight system;
  • Modernize freight infrastructure and operations to grow the economy, increase competitiveness and improve quality of life; and
  • Prepare for the future by supporting the development of data, technologies and workforce capabilities that improve freight system performance.
The DOT developed this plan through a multi-agency effort with input from freight stakeholders in both the public and private sectors. The department will use the plan to guide national freight policy, programs, initiatives and investments.

The plan will also be used to inform state freight plans and identify freight data and research needs. It provides a framework for increased cross-sector, multijurisdictional and multimodal coordination and partnerships, and meets the requirement of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act  (FAST Act) to develop a strategic plan to implement the goals of the new National Multimodal Freight Policy.
