NEBRASKA WHEAT PRODUCTION FORECAST

Based on May 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2011 winter wheat crop is forecast at 56.7 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year’s crop, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field office. Average yield is forecast at 42 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year but 1 bushel above the ten-year average.

Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.35 million acres, down 140,000 acres or 9 percent from last year.  This would be 90 percent of the planted acres, below last year and the ten-year average.  The May 1 wheat condition was rated 47 percent good to excellent, below both last year and average.  Crop development was about 1 week behind normal due to cool temperatures during April. As of May 1, subsoil moisture supplies were below last year and the 5-year average.
