STATE MEAT INSPECTION STUDY ADVANCES DOLLARS FROM YOUR FEED CASH FUND TAPPED FOR STUDY, LIVESTOCK MARKETING NEWS The state would research the feasibility of a meat and poultry inspection program under a bill advanced from general file March 30. As originally introduced, LB 305 would have directed the state Department of Agriculture to create a cooperative state inspection program by 2013, and would have tapped $200,000 from the Commercial Feed Administration Cash Fund for the first two years of its operation. The Nebraska Grain and Feed Association (NGF) strongly objected to the initial funding for the program coming from an ear tag transfer over the next two years from the Commercial Feed Administration Cash Fund, funds deriving from the-per ton fee paid by elevators, ethanol producers and feed manufacturers on manufactured feed and feed ingredients that are supposed to be utilized by the state Department of agriculture to conduct commercial feed inspections.
An amendment adopted 40-0, reduced the scope of the bill and requires the department to submit a report to the Legislature describing actions necessary to implement a state meat and poultry inspection program. The amendment would permit use of the Commercial Feed Administration Cash Fund for expenses related to the report, which the state department ofagriculture estimates will cost $25,000. Additionally, money was also tapped from the Commercial Feed Administration to assist funding the state livestock marketing reporting service, another program totally unrelated to the origination or utilization of the Commercial Feed Administrative Cash fund. It should be noted that the industry was not informed or consulted by the sponsor of this legislation, Sen. Larson, regarding the inappropriate utilization of the Commercial Feed Administrative Cash fund for these unrelated programs.
