NGF SUPPORTS INCREASE OF WAREHOUSE STORAGE & HANDLING RATES The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) will hold a 2:00 PM hearing May 7, 2008 to take comments on proposals to adjust Schedule A & E handling and storage rates. The Nebraska Grain and Feed Association (NGF) will join other organizations and support an increase to the Schedule A & E handling and storage rates state licensed elevators can charge. NGF will also be conducting a Board of Directors meeting at 9:30 AM, May 7, at the Association office, 1233 Lincoln Mall, Lincoln, NE. Association members are encouraged to attend the Board meeting, or make their voices heard at the PSC hearing. Record commodity prices, a volatile grain market, the expansion of bio fuels production and soaring transportation and energy costs has taxed NGF members across the state. Nebraska's current maximum for in and out charges is 25 cents per bushel, and the storage rate for soybeans stands at about 4 cents per bushel per month, while corn and most other grains are at 3.5 cents per bushel per month. Nebraska handling charges and soybean storage rates have have not changed since 1987. Corn and other grain storage rates haven't increased since 2001. “NGF members are facing escalating cost for fuel and transportation, interest rates, insurance, labor and repairs,” said NGF President Andy Kuhn, of Countryside Cooperative in Firth. “After several years without increasing the maximum handling and storage rates, we felt the time was right to press for an upward adjustment.” The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) is also requesting that the CME group survey elevators across the nation about a national rate increase. In a survey of several states in the region, NGF found that most do not have any regulations governing how much elevators can charge. Most states that do not have storage or handling limits require that the elevator annually file their charges and storage fees with the regulatory agency, and prominently post them on site. NGF members are encouraged to attend the PSC hearing on May 7, 2008. Please call the NGF office at 402-476-6174 with your comments or questions.
